The consequences of limited divorces vary from state to state. Typically, a limited divorce is commonly referred to as a separation decree; the right to cohabitation is terminated but the marriage is not dissolved and the status of the parties is not altered.

A little less than half of all marriages in the United States end in divorce. The current divorce rate is down a few percentage points from a peak in 1981, but the current divorce rate is almost double what is was in the 1950s.

Annulment

Definition:
The legal dissolution of a marriage. In an annulment, the marriage is treated as though it never existed.

Abandonment

Definition:
When a parent leaves a child without enough care, supervision, support, or parental contact for an excessive period of time.

Legal Separation

Definition:
A court order arranging the terms (custody, support, etc.) under which a married couple will live separately. This addresses the same issues as divorce, but does not completely dissolve the marriage.
